When should children be seen by an Orthodontist?

The American Association of Orthodontist recommend that a child’s visit to an Orthodontist should be no later than 7 years of age. This enables early detection & intervention, if necessary, to reduce problems in later life.

Orthodontic problems in 7-10 years olds

      • Early or late loss of baby teeth
      • Difficulty in chewing or biting
      • Mouth breathing
      • Thumb or finger sucking
      • Crowded, misplaced or blocked- out teeth
      • Jaws that shift or make sounds
      • Biting the cheek or roof of the mouth
      • Abnormal bite
      • Jaws and teeth out of proportion with the rest of the face.

      Orthodontic treatment in teenagers can:

      • Reduce risk of accidental injury to protruding teeth
      • Influence the growth of the jaws to improve the bite
      • Make the teeth easier to clean, reducing the risk of decay & gum disease
      • Eliminate undue stresses on the jaw joints & abnormal tooth wear

Common questions about braces for kids

      Free braces for kids

It is certainly possible to get free braces for kids via the NHS, however As stated on the NHS website “Orthodontic treatment is usually only started after most of the child’s adult teeth have started to come through… Usually when there are about 12 years old”. Our philosophy is to work with the development and growth of the child’s jaw to avoid adult problems, this therefore means we prefer to start orthodontics from the age of 7. This treatment is unfortunately not funded by the NHS and is only available on a private basis.

How much are braces for kids?

An initial clinical consultation is free. Children’s metal braces then start from around £1870 or Invisalign is available from £2495. We offer finance options bringing the cost of treatment down to the price of a cup of coffee per day, around £2.

How early should I take my child to the orthodontist?

The British Orthodontic Society recommend patients are seen from the age of 7. This allows us to work with the development and growth of your child, rather than try to move their teeth after growth has  finished. A specialist orthodontist will also be able to spot potential problems, looking at how baby teeth are aligned, how the jaws work together and then present a treatment plan to prevent adult problems occurring.
